Department Spotlight: Birdsboro-Union Fire Department

We’re highlighting the amazing departments we insure around the country and all they do for their communities. For this department spotlight we interviewed Birdsboro-Union Fire Department in Birdsboro, PA!

When was your department founded?

The Birdsboro-Union Fire Department (BUFD) was formed in 2010 as the result of the merger of the Friendship Fire Company of Birdsboro and the Union Fire Company of Union Township. The Friendship fire company was founded in 1884 and had just celebrated its 125th anniversary a year before the merger.

 

What community/communities do you support?

Our first due area is the Borough of Birdsboro and Union Township, an area of 36 square miles. French Creek State Park and the Hopewell Foundry National Park are in our response area. Through mutual aid, we also serve Exeter, Robeson, and Amity Townships and the Borough of Mount Penn.

 

What kinds of incidents does your department commonly deal with?

We serve the community with fire, rescue and QRS responses. We average over 500 calls per year.

 

What types of engines do you have?

Engine 7 is a 2012 Pierce Saber, 1500 gpm pump and 1,775 gallons of water.

Engine 7-1 is a 1994 Pierce Saber, 1,000 gpm pump and 750 gallons of water.

Brush 7, 1986 GMC 2500.

ATV 7, a 2012 Polaris Ranger with a skid unit. 

We also have a Utility 7 which is a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 crew cab with a Reading service body. In addition we have our Rescue 7, a 2019 Pierce Enforcer PUC (pictured at the beginning of article).

What fundraisers or other annual events do you host as a department and/or are a part of within your community?

We hold flower sales every Easter and Mother’s Day. We also host a Golf Tournament the last Sunday in September. This year’s event will be our 24th Golf Tournament at the Reading Country Club. For more information on this event, contact golf@bufd7.org

How has Provident been able to support your department and its members?

Provident, along with Chief Ed Mann, have been a great help to our department for over 25 years. We appreciate the invaluable training programs that have been presented at our station and the prompt service for any of the claims we have had over the years.
