Why Evidence-Based Treatment is Preferable 

Evidence-based treatment involves procedures based on previously observed effects. Such programs rely on successful results observed in the same or similar treatment programs. 

Evidence-based treatment is generally much more effective than other approaches since it doesn’t rely on trial-by-error programs or therapeutic procedures. Basing the treatment on scientifically-sound practices and objective knowledge dramatically increases the patient’s chances of recovery. 

The Importance of Mental Health Care

Increasing evidence supports the need for mental health care among first responders. Plenty of people know the stresses and challenges of the job.  

Further adding to the challenges is the fact that the system of trauma and mental health problems differs from person to person. Many first responders display similar traits for every issue they experience.

For example, the symptoms and manifestation of addiction bear many similarities from person to person, even if there are some slight differences among individuals. And while there is considerably more variance regarding mental health issues, many common traits are apparent.

As with everyone needing treatment, first responders need health care that provides the best support. Most will need evidence-based treatment. 

Many challenges get in the way of obtaining treatment. Stigma is only one of these, but its impact on first responders’ ability to get help for their mental health issues can be significant.

Thankfully, there are many options for emergency care professionals to get the health care services they need in a supportive environment that is free from shame and ridicule. And while pushback from family members and coworkers is still a significant hurdle, firefighters and first responders now have more options to get the help they need when they need it. 

Mental Health Issues Among First Responders 

Some of the more tragic parts of mental health problems among first responders are that it often leads to other issues. Substance addiction is one example; many can even suffer emotional, physical, and spiritual distress because of mental health issues.

Many other factors contribute to higher rates of mental health problems among first responders. Those factors include long shifts and constant contact with others with mental health issues. They also experience constant exposure to traumatic events and other health issues. 

These contribute partly to the high rates of mental health problems afflicting many first responders. Some individuals develop these issues before entering the profession and may rely on self-medication to help them cope and get through the typical workday.

Self-medication itself can take on many forms. But whether it involves alcohol or substance abuse, gambling, or unhealthy sexual behavior, the common thread between these actions is that they help the individual cope with the trauma and stress that is a regular part of their jobs. 

Evidence-based treatment can tremendously reduce the harmful and long-term effects of working in emergency care services. For professionals working in these fields, the availability of appropriate and adequate support is crucial for ensuring their continued physical and mental well-being.
